FORT KENT - On a windy, snowy day, 57 participants turned out to ski Northern Maine's annual citizen ski race and tour series at the 10th Mountain Ski Center in Fort Kent, the Frostbite 5K, 20K, and 40K Freestyle.

MADAWASKA - The Pride of Madawaska Marching Band will be taking orders for $5 foot-long subs until Feb. 2 for pick-up on Sunday morning Feb. 5, just in time for Super Bowl.

Organizers will make the subs fresh to order Sunday morning and they will be ready for pick up from 11a.m. -1 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

FORT KENT/MADAWASKA - On Wednesday, Jan. 25 the Fort Kent Warriors faced the Madawaska Owls in a packed auditorium due to the long time 'town rivalry.'

The JV boys were first to take the court with Fort Kent beating Madawaska 41-37.

The varsity teams played next.

FORT KENT - On Monday, Jan. 23, the Central Aroostook Panthers traveled to Fort Kent in freezing rain that caused the cancellation of the JV game scheduled for the same night to take on the Warrior boys' varsity team.

FORT KENT - Melissa Manning, one of the Maine Winter Sports Center biathletes living and training in Fort Kent, has achieved the first of her two main goals as a biathlete by making the Junior World Championship team. The eighteen-year-old will head to Kontiolahti, Finland this year to compete against biathletes from all over the world Feb. 20 through Feb. 26.

AROOSTOOK COUNTY - On Saturday, Maine State Trooper Carman Lilley arrested a man who, two days earlier, fled the scene of a snowmobile accident in Patten, Maine, abandoning a man who had sustained injuries in the accident.

According to a press release, Trooper Tim Saucier assisted Lilley when they located Ronald McGraw, age 39 of Patten, at his residence and arrested him without incident on an outstanding warrant.

Police then transported McGraw to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor.

AROOSTOOK COUNTY - Maine State Police are seeking a man who fled the scene of a snowsled accident on Thursday, Jan. 26, at approximately 8:40 p.m.

According to a press release from Sergeant Brian L. Harris, Ronald McGraw, age 39 of Patten, was driving a snowsled on Heald Ave. in Patten, when he struck a parked tractor trailer that Kerry Swallow of Patten owned.

FORT KENT - The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday, Jan. 31 from noon to 5 p.m. in the Fox Auditorium.

The blood drive is co-sponsored by UMFK's Kappa Rho and Student Nurses' Organization. A table will be set-up for individuals to make an appointment in Cyr Hall until Friday, January 27 or you may contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767 to schedule an appointment.

FORT KENT - The University of Maine at Fort Kent's Alumni Association will host a talent show on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. in the UMFK Fox Auditorium.

Tickets will be sold at the door on the evening of the performance at $5 per person.

The show will feature a variety of local talent for the public to enjoy, including vocal, instrumental, and dance performances.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA/Fort Kent - The University of Maine at Fort Kent women's basketball team, winners of four straight games, jumped all the way into twenty-first place in this weeks' USCAA Coaches Poll released by the national office in Newport News, Virginia.

The UMFK men's basketball team, winners of nine of their last ten games, remained in eighth place in the Men's Basketball D1 poll.

FORT KENT - At a town council meeting on Jan. 23, Fort Kent council members voted unanimously to develop an ordinance that prohibits the sale and use of consumer fireworks within the town limits after the new state law allowing fireworks in the state went into effect Jan. 1.

The town council's decision is in opposition to the town planning board's decision.

AROOSTOOK COUNTY - The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced that the U.S. and Canada have agreed to extend the 2006 U.S.-Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement (SLA) for two years. Michaud, Chairman of the House Trade Working Group, led a bipartisan letter that was sent to USTR last October calling for strong, timely, and effective enforcement mechanisms as a condition for supporting an extension of the SLA.

FORT KENT - Budget crunches at the federal level may cripple Maine's involvement in the World Acadian Congress in 2014.

The project, which has an $11.9 million total budget, originally stipulated a $1 million contribution from the state of Maine and a $1 million contribution from the United States government, said WAC Maine International President Jason Parent.

FORT KENT, Maine - Late Saturday night and into Sunday morning, temperatures dropped to -18 degrees Fahrenheit (-27.8 C) in Fort Kent, Maine, forcing organizers to delay the mass start for both the men and the women biathletes on the second day of the North American Cup Biathlon competition.

As I write this, I am looking out on a typical winter day in Fort Kent, with snow falling gently and trucks and cars making their careful way back-and-forth on Main Street.

Behind me is chaos.

Some folks have noticed that there was little new news on the Fiddlehead Focus website on Friday. There is a reason. Early Friday morning, a man broke into the offices of Fiddlehead Focus and Paper Signs Ink, stealing equipment and vandalizing the interior.

FORT KENT - Fort Kent Police Chief Kenneth Michaud arrested 36-year-old Luis Alduende-Villa Friday afternoon in connection with a burglary at 267 West Main Street, which houses Paper Signs Ink, and is the operation center for Fiddlehead Focus.

FORT KENT - At some time during the early morning hours of Friday, Jan. 20, an individual or group of individuals burglarized the lower floor of a building located at 267 West Main Street, which houses Paper Signs Ink, and is the operation center for Fiddlehead Focus.

The thieves made away with an undetermined amount of computer and electronics equipment, software, and cash from both of the businesses.
